Tournament Rules
The Mater Dei Premier Invitational is a Varsity girls soccer tournament, organized and sponsored by Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, and sanctioned by the CIF Southern Section.
Each participating team is guaranteed THREE games of pool play. We will have 3 groups of FOUR Teams. ALL pool play games will be held at the GREAT PARK (Wednesday-Friday).
We return to Mater Dei High School on SATURDAY. The winners of each group will advance to the Semi-Finals plus the next highest team with the most points will advance as the Wildcard. Then there will be TWO Semi-Final Matches on Saturday at 9:00. The team with the most points in Pool Play will play the Wildcard and the #2 will play #3 finisher will play in the other Semi-Final game. The Championship game will kick-off at 2:00 on Saturday.
Points will be awarded during pool play using the following ten-point system:
- Six (6) points for each Win.
- Three (3) points for each Tie.
- Zero (0) points for each Loss.
- One (1) point for each Goal scored up to a maximum of three (3) per game.
- Example: 2-1 win would be 8 points
- One (1) point for each Shutout.
- Minus one (-1) point for each Ejection (player or coach).
- A 0-0 Tie will be scored as three (3) points for each team.
- Example: 3-3 tie would be 6 points
Any tie in total points between teams at the end of pool play will be resolved on the following basis:
- First tiebreaker - The winner in head to head competition.
- Second tiebreaker - Goal Differential (Goals scored minus Goals conceded)
- Third tiebreaker - Most Goals ~ total goals scored in Pool Play.
- Fourth tiebreaker - Fewest Goals against.
- Fifth tiebreaker - Most Shutouts.
- Sixth tiebreaker - Coin Flip.
SEMI-FINALS & FINALS
- SEMI-FINAL GROUP: The team that finishes with the most points as a 1st Place Finisher will play the team with the most points that qualified as a WILDCARD. Then the next TWO Group Winners will play each other in the other Semi-Final
DISPUTES: The Competition Director and Tournament Director will settle all disputes and the decision will be final.
If a Semi-Final or Championship game ends in a tie at the end of regulation play, there will be a single (15) fifteen-minute overtime period. If that overtime period ends in a tie, a winner will be determined by a penalty-kick shootout.
ALL games (Pool Play, Semi-Finals, and Championship Game) will be 35 minute halves.
